PoE2 Currency Orbs Explained
Every currency orb in Path of Exile 2 serves a specific function in the crafting and trading system. This reference guide explains exactly what each orb does, when to use it, and common crafting combinations.
Complete Orb Reference
Chaos Orb
Function: Rerolls all random modifiers on a Rare item. When to use: When you have a Rare item with some good modifiers but want to try for better ones. Key detail: Only works on Rare (yellow) items. Does not work on Normal or Magic items. Trade value: The standard trade currency in most leagues.
Divine Orb
Function: Rerolls the numeric values of all explicit modifiers on an item. Does not change which modifiers appear, only their roll values. When to use: When you have an item with perfect modifiers but want better numeric rolls. Key detail: Expensive. Only use on items where the modifier combination is already ideal. Trade value: High-value currency. Typically 100-200x a Chaos Orb.
Exalted Orb
Function: Adds a new random modifier to a Rare item that has fewer than 6 modifiers. If the item already has 6 modifiers, it upgrades one existing modifier instead. When to use: When you have a 5-mod Rare item and need one more specific modifier. Key detail: The added modifier is random. Use Crafting Bench afterward to guarantee a specific modifier if the Exalted result is not what you needed. Trade value: 30-50x a Chaos Orb.
Orb of Annulment
Function: Removes one random modifier from a Rare item. When to use: When you have a 6-mod Rare with one bad modifier you want to remove. Key detail: After removal, you can use Exalted Orb or Crafting Bench to add the modifier you actually want. Trade value: 15-25x a Chaos Orb.
Orb of Alchemy
Function: Upgrades a Normal (white) item to a Rare (yellow) item with random modifiers. When to use: As the first step of crafting a new item from a good Normal base. Key detail: Only works on Normal items. The resulting modifiers are completely random. Trade value: Low. Commonly available.
Orb of Alteration
Function: Rerolls all random modifiers on a Magic (blue) item. When to use: When trying to get specific modifiers on a Magic item before using Regal Orb. Key detail: Only works on Magic items. Can produce 1-2 modifiers. Trade value: Very low. Commonly available.
Orb of Regal
Function: Upgrades a Magic item to Rare, adding one new modifier while keeping existing ones. When to use: When you have a Magic item with one perfect modifier and want to add more. Key detail: Preserves the existing modifier. The new modifier is random. Trade value: Approximately 1:1 with Chaos Orb.
Orb of Scouring
Function: Removes all modifiers from an item, returning it to Normal quality. When to use: When you want to start over on a Rare item, or clear modifiers before using Orb of Alchemy. Key detail: Removes explicit modifiers only. Implicit modifiers are preserved. Trade value: Very low.
Orb of Transmutation
Function: Upgrades a Normal item to Magic with one random modifier. When to use: First step when trying to craft a specific Magic item. Key detail: Very basic. Mostly used in crafting chains. Trade value: Negligible.
Vaal Orb
Function: Corrupts an item, producing one of several random outcomes. When to use: When you are gambling for a powerful corrupted outcome. Possible outcomes:
- Item gains a new implicit modifier (good)
- Item modifiers are rerolled (risky)
- Item becomes a Unique version (rare)
- Item gains vaal implicit (very rare, potentially very powerful)
- Nothing happens (common) Key detail: Corrupted items cannot be modified further with standard orbs. High risk, high reward. Trade value: Low-to-moderate. Used primarily for gambling.
Gemcutter’s Prism (GCP)
Function: Divides a skill gem into two: one with the quality and one with the level. When to use: When you have a high-quality gem and want a fresh level 1 gem with the same quality, or vice versa. Key detail: Quality gems are used for gem quality upgrades on other gems. Trade value: Moderate. Quality gems are always in demand.
Orb of Regret
Function: Grants one passive skill tree respec point. When to use: When you need to remove passive points from your tree. Key detail: Essential for build respec. Accumulate these over time. Trade value: Moderate. Always needed.
Blessed Orb
Function: Rerolls the values of implicit modifiers on an item. When to use: When you want better implicit modifier values. Key detail: Only affects implicit modifiers, not explicit ones. Trade value: Low.
Orb of Chance
Function: Upgrades a Normal item to a random quality (Magic, Rare, or potentially Unique). When to use: When gambling for a specific Unique from a Normal base. Key detail: Very low success rate for specific Uniques. Trade value: Low.
