Path of Exile 2 Complete Beginner's Guide
Everything a new player needs to know about Path of Exile 2 in patch 0.5 Return of the Ancients. From character creation to your first map, this guide covers all the fundamentals.
Path of Exile 2 Complete Beginner’s Guide
Welcome to Wraeclast. Path of Exile 2 is a dark, complex Action RPG that rewards knowledge and punishes carelessness. If you are coming from other ARPGs, expect a steeper learning curve but a vastly deeper experience. This guide walks you through everything you need for your first hours and beyond.
What Is Path of Exile 2?
Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) is a free-to-play Action RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games, set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. It features a massive passive skill tree, an intricate crafting system, and endgame content that rivals any ARPG on the market. The current version is patch 0.5: Return of the Ancients.
Key Differences From Similar Games
- No traditional classes. You choose a base class, but your real build comes from passive nodes and Ascendancy choices.
- Free-to-play with ethical monetization. No pay-to-win. Stash tabs and cosmetics are the primary purchases.
- Seasonal leagues. Every few months, a new league resets the economy and introduces fresh mechanics.
- Complex crafting. Item crafting is a core endgame activity, not an afterthought.
Choosing Your First Character
PoE2 has eight base classes, each with multiple Ascendancy specializations:
| Base Class | Ascendancies | Playstyle | Beginner Friendly? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranger | Deadeye, Pathfinder | Ranged bow, fast mapping | Yes |
| Witch | Infernalist, Blood Mage, Lich, Abyssal Lich | Spells, minions, DoT | Yes |
| Mercenary | Witchhunter, Tactician, Gemling Legionnaire | Crossbow, grenades | Moderate |
| Monk | Invoker, Acolyte of Chayula, Martial Artist | Melee, combo, bells | Complex |
| Huntress | Huntress, Spirit Walker | Spear, companions, beasts | Complex |
| Sorceress | Stormweaver, Chronomancer, Disciple of Varashta | Elemental spells | Moderate |
| Warrior | Titan, Wavewing, Kitava’s Forge | Melee tank, shields | Moderate |
| Druid | Shaman, Oracle | Shapeshifting, nature | Yes |
Best First Character Recommendations
For patch 0.5, our recommended starting characters are:
- ED Contagion Lich — Safest starter. Chaos DoT that spreads between enemies. Minimal gear needed.
- Lightning Arrow Deadeye — Fastest mapping. Ranged bow with excellent clear speed.
- Plant Oracle Druid — Best overall comfort. Strong campaign with accessible scaling.
- Grenades Witchhunter — Highest AoE damage starter. Explosive crossbow clears.
Understanding the Passive Skill Tree
The passive skill tree in PoE2 is enormous, with over 1,300 nodes. A typical build uses 100-130 passive points. The key priorities:
- Life nodes — You need at least 4,000+ life by endgame.
- Damage nodes — Specific to your damage type (elemental, physical, chaos).
- Resistances — 75% cap in Fire, Cold, and Lightning resistance.
- Movement speed — Underrated but critical for quality of life.
The Skill Gem System
Skills come from Skill Gems socketed into your gear. Each gem is an active skill, and you can link Support Gems to modify them. A 6-linked setup = Main Skill + 5 Supports.
Gem Quality
In patch 0.5, gem quality provides meaningful new modifiers. Always quality your primary skill gems for a significant power increase.
Act Progression Overview
Act 1: Count Grenor
A straightforward DPS check. Pick up Cold Resistance from Beira before this fight. Do not skip side quests for passive points.
Act 2: Jamanra, the Abomination
The first real wall. Multi-phase fight with wide AoE. Grab Lightning Resistance from the Sisters of Garukhan shrine.
Act 3: Doryani, Royal Thaumaturge
Most mechanically complex act boss. Multiple phases, lightning attacks, punishes standing still.
Act 4: Tavakai, the Fallen
Three phases plus a transformation at 25% health. Applies shock, ignite, and fire resistance curse simultaneously.
Essential Mechanics
Elemental Resistances
You need 75% in all three elemental resistances to survive endgame. This is the single most important defensive stat.
Life and Defensive Layers
- Maximum Life as primary health pool
- Resistances to reduce elemental damage
- Evasion, Armor, or Energy Shield as secondary layer
- Flasks for on-demand recovery
Currency Basics
- Chaos Orb — Rerolls Rare item modifiers. Standard trade currency.
- Divine Orb — Rerolls numeric values. Expensive.
- Exalted Orb — Adds a modifier. High value.

Common Beginner Mistakes
- Ignoring resistances — Running uncapped res in endgame is fatal.
- Not upgrading weapons — Your weapon is your biggest damage source.
- Skipping side quests — Missing passive points compounds over time.
- Over-investing in leveling gear — You will replace it in 10 levels.
- Ignoring movement speed — Repositioning quickly saves more lives than extra damage.
Your Path Forward
After the campaign, enter the Map system — PoE2’s endgame core. Maps are randomized instances with increasing difficulty and rewards.
