Forbidden Rites Guide (0.5.5): Rewards, Challenges & End Date
PoE2 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites guide: Ritual loops and boss clusters, Sacred Bloom Wildwood, all 8 challenges, rewards, best builds, and the Dec 11 end date.
PoE2 Forbidden Rites Event Guide (0.5.5)
Forbidden Rites is the last challenge league of Path of Exile 2’s Early Access. It launched on September 4, 2026 with patch 0.5.5 and runs until the 1.0 full release on December 11, 2026 — roughly fourteen weeks, not a one-month side event. Ritual, previously an endgame-only activity, is now woven through the entire campaign, and the Viridian Wildwood returns behind an event-exclusive key item. Whether you are starting your first character or chasing all eight challenges before the deadline, this guide covers how the league works, what is permanently yours when it ends, and how to spend the remaining weeks well.
If you want the mechanic in even more detail, our Ritual mechanic guide goes encounter by encounter; this page is the complete event overview.
How to Start and What Is New
Getting in is one selection away. On the character selection screen, choose Forbidden Rites and create a new character there. GGG’s wording in the official FAQ is that simple: “Just select Forbidden Rites on the character selection screen, and create a new character there.”
Like every new league, Forbidden Rites ships a fresh economy. Everyone starts at level 1 with zero currency and no carried-over gear. Standard, Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found variations are all available, along with private league versions. Hardcore is parented to its Standard counterpart: die in Hardcore Forbidden Rites and your character continues in Standard Forbidden Rites rather than being deleted.
Three more facts shape your planning:
- No skill or Ascendancy balance changes ship in 0.5.5. If a build works in 0.5, it works the same way in 0.5.5, and every build guide written for the current patch stays valid. Treat this as a build-planning fact rather than an opinion. Note the distinction in the 0.5.5 patch notes: Soul Cores were rebalanced with many buffs, the Trial of Chaos was overhauled, and the Arbiter fights were reworked — those are item and system changes, not numerical character nerfs.
- The 0.5.5 global changes apply in every league. The Trial of Chaos overhaul, 17 new Soul Cores, Abyssal Ravines, faster Atlas progression, and the Arbiter rework affect the whole game regardless of league.
- Expedition is now core. Farrow, Dannig, and Expedition content, including Expedition Tablets, appear in both Standard and Forbidden Rites from Act 4 onward. Runes of Aldur itself stays open and runs in parallel until 1.0.
If you are returning specifically for the end of Early Access, the 1.0 pre-launch checklist lays out the week-by-week wind-down.
The Ritual Loop, Step by Step
Each campaign area contains a Ritual encounter built around a cluster of standing stones called a Ritual Effigy. The loop is the same every time:
- Find the Effigy somewhere in the area.
- Clear the guards surrounding it.
- Activate the Ritual by touching the Effigy, which revives the monsters you just killed with dangerous Plague modifiers.
- Survive the waves of revived, empowered monsters.
- Collect Tribute, the Ritual currency paid out per wave cleared.
- Spend the Tribute in the Ritual window: buy an item outright, Defer it so it appears again in a later area, or Offer it to the King in the Mists to reroll the selection.
Campaign Rituals deliberately pay out differently from map Rituals. As the patch notes put it, the campaign versions “provide items useful for levelling, such as Currency for crafting your gear, alongside a bunch of equipment.”
| Aspect | Campaign Ritual | Endgame Ritual (Maps) |
|---|---|---|
| Rewards | Levelling currency, equipment, gems | Unique items, Omens, Sacred Blooms |
| Unique items in shop | No, except boss-cluster Rituals | Yes |
| Wildwood access | No | Yes, through Sacred Blooms |
| Special content | Chained boss clusters | Head of the King chains |
The practical rule: do not skip campaign Rituals. They are a steady source of crafting currency and gear upgrades exactly when your resistances and weapon damage are falling behind, and the boss clusters described below are the only campaign source of Ritual Unique shops.
Party Play
Ritual is no longer awkward in a group. Every party member now earns their own Tribute and gets their own limited reward selection to spend on or offer to the King in the Mists. One catch: rewards offered to party members cannot be rerolled, and everyone in the party must hear Aoife’s introduction before the Ritual can begin.
Royal Lenience
The patch adds a new Ritual Atlas notable, Royal Lenience: Tribute already offered to the King can be spent to Defer items, but deferring with offered Tribute costs 500% more. It is an emergency safety net for the moment you reroll away something you suddenly cannot live without, not a routine economy tool.
Boss Clusters: The Signature Mechanic
The standout addition in Forbidden Rites is the chained boss cluster. Twice in every Act and once in every Interlude, a cluster of Ritual Effigies appears on the World Map directly on top of area boss arenas rather than at a random spot in the zone.
Defeat the boss inside its Ritual and it is carried forward to the next Ritual in the cluster, where it joins the next boss’s wave. Each link stacks another boss into the fight, so the finale is a multi-boss encounter drawn from every arena in the chain. Complete the full series and your accumulated Tribute unlocks a Unique-item shop — the only way campaign Rituals sell Uniques.
Two strategies follow directly from the design:
- Bank Tribute across the chain. It accumulates, and spending or offering it early means less to spend in the Unique shop at the end. The best items only become available once the chain is complete.
- Prepare for overlapping mechanics. A chain finale can layer several bosses and several damage types into one arena. Read the Plague modifiers before activating, keep a movement skill ready, and do not face-tank the revival waves.
GGG has not published the shop’s exact drop tables or prices. Community verification indicates the pool skews toward levelling and mid-tier Uniques, with high-end chase items as rare possibilities — screenshots of Mageblood and Sire of Stars from campaign clusters have circulated and been analysed as genuine. Treat any specific chase Unique as a possibility, not an expectation.
Sacred Blooms and the Viridian Wildwood
Wildwood content is now gated behind a Forbidden Rites-exclusive item. Sacred Blooms appear as a Ritual reward in endgame maps, and the patch notes are explicit that they “can only be found in the Forbidden Rites League.” Apply one to a cluster of maps on your Atlas and that cluster gains a Viridian Wildwood entrance.
Inside, you follow and collect trails of Azmeri Wisps — Primal, Vivid, and Wild wisps, plus a rarer fourth type, the Sacred Wisp. When you leave the Wildwood, the wisps you collected empower the cluster’s monsters: harder fights, better payouts. GGG has not revealed what the Sacred Wisp specifically does, so treat it as an unquantified bonus rather than planning around it. Our Wildwood wisps guide breaks down how the empowerment scales.
One structural note: the old Viridian Wildwood Unique Map has been disabled. Sacred Blooms are now the only route into the Wildwood, which makes running endgame Rituals a mandatory part of farming it.
All 8 Challenges and the Reward Track
Eight challenges gate five permanent rewards. The four cosmetic items are only obtainable during Forbidden Rites; once earned they stay on the account forever, including after 1.0.
| Challenges Completed | Reward |
|---|---|
| 2 | Locust Footprints |
| 4 | Locust Swarm Rare Finisher Effect |
| 6 | Wildwood Guardian Pet |
| 8 | Wildwood Affliction Level-up Effect |
The Wildwood Guardian Pet at six challenges is the headline milestone: it doubles as a proximity alert for unique monsters, which makes it functionally useful as well as cosmetic. From the very first challenge onward, you also receive pieces of the Forbidden Rites Totem, a hideout decoration that permanently showcases how many challenges you completed in the league.
The eight challenge conditions, as they currently appear in game:
| Challenge | Condition |
|---|---|
| The Riteseeker | Complete 11 specific Ritual encounters across listed zones (Acts 1–4 plus Interludes) |
| The Hunter | Defeat 15 named rare monsters across campaign and Interlude zones |
| The Ascendant | Complete all 4 tiers of Ascendancy Trials and claim all 8 Ascendancy Points |
| The Master | Reach character level 90 |
| The Reliquarian | Obtain 50 unique items from Forbidden Rites Ritual events |
| The Nameless | Use 18 different Ritual Omens |
| The Cartographer | Fully allocate 3 endgame Atlas passive trees (36 Ritual, 31 Delirium, 35 Abyss nodes) |
| The Vanquisher | Defeat 3 pinnacle bosses: the Aberration, Xesht, and Atziri the Red Queen |
Notice how the list distributes across the whole league. The first four are largely campaign milestones; the last four demand mapping, Ritual Omens, full Atlas investment across three mechanics, and pinnacle boss kills. The Totem is a full-league project, and the Pet is a mid-to-late-league milestone, not a weekend chase. Progress challenges alongside normal levelling — clear the 11 listed Ritual zones and the 15 named rares while they are on your route instead of backtracking later. If the trial tiers are the wall for you, the Ascendancy guide covers all four, and our pinnacle boss strategy guide covers the Vanquisher targets.
What to Play: Builds That Fit the League
Because 0.5.5 changes no skill numbers, the 0.5 tier lists carry over wholesale. Let the league itself drive your choice: you fight in enclosed Ritual arenas, survive revived waves stacked with Plague mods, and kill several bosses merged into one arena. Community consensus favours builds with mobility or reliable positioning, strong single-target burst, and more than one defensive layer.
| Build | Class | Main Strength | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grenade Gemling | Mercenary | Boss damage plus mobility | Medium |
| ED/Contagion Lich | Witch / Lich | Cheap, forgiving, high floor | Low |
| Ice Shot Deadeye | Ranger / Deadeye | Screen clear plus Deflect | Medium |
| Twisters Spirit Walker | Huntress / Spirit Walker | High ceiling, community S-tier | Medium-High |
| Cold Spark Stormweaver | Stormweaver | Ritual arena coverage | Medium |
The site has matching write-ups for ED/Contagion Lich, Ice Shot Deadeye, and Twisters Spirit Walker, and the full ranked shortlist is in the 0.5.5 league starter builds guide.
Playstyle Picks
- Best all-around: Grenade Gemling — burst, mobility, and scaling in one package.
- Safest starter and budget pick: Essence Drain Lich — minimal gear dependency; damage-over-time ignores crit and attack speed.
- Maximum defense: Shield Wall Titan.
- Automated, low-APM mapping: Grim Pillars Oracle totems.
- Ranged control: Ice Shot Deadeye, with freeze and chill keeping revived waves manageable.
- Speed-farming ceiling: Twisters Spirit Walker.
DoT builds deserve a specific mention for this league. Ritual’s defining trick is reviving monsters you have already killed, and damage-over-time does not care whether a pack is on its first life or its second — the same Essence Drain and Contagion package melts revived waves just as cleanly as the originals, with no gear-quality gate.
What to Avoid
- One-dimensional defenses. Chain finales mix damage types; a build that mitigates only physical or only elemental gets exposed.
- Extremely slow clearers. Ritual payouts reward finishing encounters, so a sluggish build leaves Tribute and time on the floor.
- Squishy early bow characters. Ice Shot is repeatedly flagged for deaths in Acts 1–2; invest in life and evasion before stacking pure damage.
- Greedy Hardcore play. One overextended chain death drops you to Standard Forbidden Rites for good.
- Spending Tribute early in a boss cluster. Bank it for the end-of-chain Unique shop.
What Happens When Forbidden Rites Ends
This is the section with the most community misinformation, so here is the current official picture, sourced carefully.
The dates are settled. Forbidden Rites runs until the 1.0 full release and ends alongside Runes of Aldur on December 11, 2026, per the official FAQ and the 1.0 announcement. Version 1.0 opens a brand-new economy.
Characters are not wiped — but they never enter 1.0. GGG’s standing Early Access FAQ states it directly: “none of your characters will be wiped, they will just go to a league called Early Access (so they will never be in Standard)… After launch the ‘Early Access’ characters will still exist.” Staff restated the same policy in this thread. Your Forbidden Rites characters are Early Access-era characters, so after December 11 they remain playable in the permanent Early Access realm and can never move into the new 1.0 Standard or challenge leagues. None of 1.0’s fresh economy is accessible to them, and the same FAQ warns that characters in old leagues may end up “somewhat broken by balance changes.”
Stash items: expect Remove-Only tabs, but watch for the dedicated post. GGG has used Remove-Only stash migration at every prior Early Access league end — the Return of the Ancients FAQ says “All the items will be in Remove Only stash tabs in the Standard leagues” — the Early Access-era Standard leagues, not 1.0 — and the Fate of the Vaal core announcement states “All characters and their items will then be migrated to the Standard or Hardcore Early Access leagues. There will be no wipes.” GGG has not yet posted the Forbidden Rites-specific migration announcement as of this writing; based on its own repeated official pattern, Remove-Only tabs in the Early Access realm are the expected outcome, but the exact mechanics remain pending. Historically the dedicated post lands roughly two weeks before a league ends, so watch for it in late November or early December.
| What You Have | After December 11 |
|---|---|
| Challenge cosmetics (4 items) | Permanent, account-wide, usable in 1.0 |
| Forbidden Rites Totem | Permanent hideout decoration, account-wide |
| Purchased stash tabs | Available in new leagues, starting empty |
| Account MTX | Account-wide as always |
| Forbidden Rites characters | Persist, playable only in the Early Access realm |
| Stash items | Expected as Remove-Only tabs in the Early Access realm; FR-specific post pending |
| League currency (Divines, Exalts) | Stays in the Early Access economy; no value in the 1.0 economy |
The economic implication is blunt: spend or use your currency now. A Divine Orb cost roughly 65 Exalted Orbs at league launch and around 730 by late September, so hoarded Exalts bleed purchasing power every week — and none of it crosses into 1.0. Convert currency into gear, challenge progress, Ascendancy completion, or builds you actually want to play. The full analysis is in our 0.5.5 economy reset guide, and the currency orbs guide covers the Divine-to-Exalted hierarchy if you are new to it.

On December 11, Path of Exile 2 goes fully free-to-play, adds the sword-wielding Duelist class and the final two campaign acts, and starts a fresh challenge-league economy. The encouraging news on content: Ritual, the Wildwood, the overhauled Trial of Chaos, Abyssal Ravines, and Expedition all remain in the base game. Your time learning them in Forbidden Rites carries over as knowledge even though your character does not. Our 1.0 full release guide covers the launch itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a new character to play? Yes. Select Forbidden Rites on the character selection screen and create a fresh level-1 character. Existing Runes of Aldur and Standard characters stay exactly where they are.
Is this a one-month event? No. Forbidden Rites runs for about fourteen weeks, from September 4 to December 11, 2026, ending alongside Runes of Aldur at the 1.0 launch.
Can I keep playing Runes of Aldur? Yes, until December 11. The two leagues run in parallel, and Expedition content from Runes of Aldur is now in the core game from Act 4 onward.
Will my character be wiped? No — but it will not enter 1.0 either. Per the official Early Access FAQ, characters persist in a permanent Early Access realm and can never move to 1.0 Standard or the new leagues.
Does my currency or gear transfer to 1.0? Currency does not cross into the 1.0 economy. Stash items are expected to land in Remove-Only tabs inside the Early Access realm based on GGG’s repeated official pattern, with the Forbidden Rites-specific migration post still pending at the time of writing.
What is permanently worth chasing? The four challenge cosmetics, the Forbidden Rites Totem, and account MTX. Challenge rewards are earnable only during the event and remain usable in 1.0.
Did 0.5.5 change any builds? There are no skill or Ascendancy balance changes, so 0.5 build plans remain valid. Soul Cores, the Trial of Chaos, and the Arbiter fights were reworked as systems — see the Soul Cores guide and the Trial of Chaos guide.
How do I get into the Viridian Wildwood? Earn Sacred Blooms from endgame Rituals — they only drop in Forbidden Rites — and apply one to a map cluster on your Atlas. The old Wildwood Unique Map is disabled.
